Surf’s Up
“Point Break” is the latest record by genre-bending indie dance artist Friends of (Zeke Reed). A native of Topanga, CA, Zeke wrote this song as an homage to Southern California surf culture and the Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze cult classic of the same name. The song’s sun-soaked protagonist is addicted to stellar swells and Balearic beats. The lyrics are delivered with a smirk, stringing together assorted surf cultural references in a humorous stream of consciousness. Featuring surf rock guitars, retro synths and a deep disco groove, “Point Break” sounds as if The Beach Boys, Gorillaz and Myd headed up the Pacific Coast Highway to record to cassette in their van. With album artwork and a promotional photoshoot inspired by Neil Young’s “On the Beach” and Anderson.Paak’s “Malibu,” the single creates a sunshiny, technicolor world all its own where the waves never disappoint and everyone’s always dancing barefoot in the sand. The forthcoming music video will bring this world further to life through drone footage of local So-Cal breaks, action surf shots, and playful spoofing of the film that inspired it. Grab a board and come along for the ride.
