Head in Space

Beaming cosmic rays from the rustic hills of Southern California, Friends of is the solo project of Topanga Canyon native Zeke Reed. A classically-trained cellist who started branching out into jazz and folk in high school, Zeke later picked up the bass as part of his college indie rock band FNTN (“Fenton”). While studying neuroscience and political philosophy at the University of Virginia, Zeke started using Ableton Live in pursuit of his lifelong love of dance music. While making what he calls "psychedelic space disco,"  Zeke continues to incorporate his eclectic musical background into genre-bending, multi-instrumental pastiche that transports minds to the edges of the galaxy. His indie-rock-inspired, electro-infused sound merges with his love of Americana, the Southwest, the ocean, space, and psychedelics. He hopes to one day settle down on a big plot of land near the Mariner Valley on Mars where he can finally don a cowboy hat atop his space helmet. Ideally they will terraform a nearby ocean so he can continue to surf and scuba dive.

Friends of combines Zeke’s classical training, indie rock mojo and electronic boogie in a sound all his own. Friends of is an inclusive project based on collaboration and influenced by artists like Odesza, Roosevelt, Toro y Moi, Little Dragon, Glass Animals, James Supercave, and Gorillaz.

When not making music, Zeke is a audio journalist, podcaster, meditator and teacher along with a scuba diver, snowboarder, surfer, camper, golfer, traveler and a producer for other artists. Reach out if you want to work on something!
